Thompson Rivers University

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) offers programs for every need, from upgrading to trades to undergraduate degrees to masters programs — on a campus that features outstanding views and nearby hiking trails. Students can choose from 140 on-campus and 60 Open Learning programs to earn certificates, diplomas, undergraduate and graduate degrees.

TRU serves 26,000 students on campus and online and provides opportunities like undergraduate research, co-op, study abroad and service learning. Popular programs include health, law and adventure tourism/tourism management, in addition to traditional academics in arts, sciences, business, education and social work.

Campus is diverse and inclusive campus, with a significant Indigenous population and international students from 90-plus countries. Class sizes are small, so students get extra attention and hands-on research opportunities. Student success/support is a top priority at TRU.

TRU turns 50 in 2020; it has grown into a thriving community where everyone finds their path.

  • Transfer Credit

If you have completed courses at another recognized post-secondary institution, you may be able to transfer those courses to TRU.

Transfer credit will be granted for eligible courses as closely as possible to specific TRU courses. When an exact TRU equivalent does not exist, unspecified transfer credit in the relevant subject area may be granted instead.

Courses successfully completed at institutions in the BC Transfer System will be granted transfer credit in accordance with equivalencies published in the BC Transfer Guide. Courses not listed in the Guide and courses completed at recognized institutions outside of the BC Transfer System will be assessed on a course-by-course basis.

All eligible prior courses will normally be awarded transfer credit. TRU faculty and program advisors will determine which of these courses will apply to your TRU program.

If the courses you have taken have not been evaluated previously by TRU, you may be contacted by the transfer credit articulation team to provide detailed outlines for those courses. For course outlines in a language other than English or French, please provide certified translations.

  • Transfer Credit Application

To apply and become eligible for transfer credit assessment:

    • apply to a TRU program
    • submit your official transcripts

Once you apply, and submit your official transcripts, you will be automatically assessed for transfer credit.

For courses beginning in September, your official transcripts and course outlines must be received by April 1 if you would like transfer credit on your student record before registration opens in June.

  • TRU Open Learning Transfer Credit

Previously earned credits can count toward your TRU credential, which means you don’t have to start from square one when enrolling in a program. Apply for your past credits to be transferred to an OL program by arranging for official post-secondary transcripts to be sent to TRU.

    Transferring Credit to OL

As part of the OL program admission process, arrange for official transcripts to be sent by your previous post-secondary institution(s) directly to OL Admissions. Documents from international institutions may require assessment by an international credential evaluation service (ICES) and you may need to provide supporting documentation with the application, particularly if your credits were completed more than seven years ago or outside of BC.

Formal education assessment begins once we have received all of the following:

    • Completed Program Admission form (students may also apply online).
    • Full payment of the program plan fee and transcript assessment fee.
    • Official transcripts of all post-secondary studies.
    • Any additional program admission requirements, such as criminal records search documents.

    Transferring Credit to Other Institutions

Students who register in Open Learning courses and plan to complete a program offered by another institution should refer to that institution’s admission information to determine program requirements.

Visiting students planning to take courses through Open Learning for transfer to another institution can register in courses without submitting transcripts.

Although a letter of permission is not required by Open Learning, it is recommended that students obtain one from their home institution to ensure that the course(s) selected will be applied to their program of study.

Courses listed on the Open Learning website delivered by the University of Victoria are Open Learning university-level courses for which students receive TRU credit on TRU transcripts. Students are responsible to be aware of transfer credit policies prior to registration for courses they plan to transfer to other institutions.
