North Island College
North Island College is a community college located on Vancouver Island offering over 900 courses and 70 credit programs. Serving a region of 80,000 square kilometres, the college has four campuses; Comox Valley, Campbell River, Port Alberni and Mt.Waddington as well as a smaller centre in Ucluelet.
Students may access a broad range of learning opportunities including: college preparatory, academic/university transfer, Certificates, Diplomas, Degrees, Post Degree Diplomas, vocational and trades training programs. There is a wide range of study areas: Business, Health Care, Tourism & Hospitality, Fine Arts & Design, Interactive Media, Trades & Technology and university partnerships/transfer, many with co-op options.
Students can expect small classes of typically no more than 35, advising and consulting support, the latest in technology and web based options, on-site library, bookstore and cafeteria facilities at the main campuses and student council, student recreation and other clubs to get involved in the college and community.
Admission Requirements
General Admission Requirements (All Students)
Age Requirement - You must normally be at least 18 years old to attend North Island College. If under 18 years old, you may be admitted:
- if you have secondary school graduation and will turn 18 years old before the end of the first calendar year of your post-secondary studies; or
- by special request and discussion with an NIC counsellor.
English Language Requirement - You must have proficiency in English at a level suitable for your desired program.
English Language Requirements
Summary
Courses are taught in English. To be admitted directly into academic programs, you must meet the specific English proficiency requirements for your type of program.
If you are applying for Undergraduate Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs at NVIT, you must have completed one of the following:
- English 12 (C)
- English First Peoples 12 (C)
- NIC ESL 092 (C+) and ESL 095 (C+)
- Academic IELTS = overall score of 6.0 (no band lower than 5.5). Students who do not have a band score of IELTS 6.0 or higher in Reading and Writing will be required to take English 104.
- TOEFL iBT = 80 overall with no subsection less than 19
- TOEFL paper-based = 550 (Code 8538)
- CAEL 60 and writing 60
- PTE Academic = 54 overall with no component less than 46
- Equivalency as determined by North Island College Admissions Department

BC Transfer Student
Credits for courses taken at other colleges or universities may be transferrable to NIC. The BC Transfer Guide allows you to check on the transferability of your courses.
NIC will grant credit for formal learning gained at post-secondary institutions if the course objectives and material are equivalent to courses offered at NIC. Only credits, not grades, are transferred. Transfer credit may be used to meet program admission requirements or program requirements leading to a credential.
You must apply for transfer credit and submit official transcripts, or in sealed envelopes, directly from the sending institution to NIC.
Out-of-Province Transfer Student
