General Admission Requirements (All Students)
English Language Requirements
Summary
Undergraduate applicants whose first language is not English (regardless of immigration or citizenship status) must meet one of the following (minimum score):
- An English Language Assessment Test score of:
- A TOEFL iBT score of 84, with at least 20 in Speaking, 20 Reading, 18 Writing and 20 Listening
- A IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with no band less than 6.0
- A CAEL score of 70 overall
- A PTE Academic score of 56
- CAE (Cambridge English Advanced) score of 176 overall, with no sub score less than 169
- CPE (Cambridge Proficiency Examination) score of 176 overall, with no sub score less than 169
- MELAB score of 81
- CELPIP Academic Level 4L
- Three consecutive years of full time education in Canada or another country where English is the primary language of instruction, and receive an over all grade of a “C” or higher. - which excludes ESL studies
- Four consecutive years of full-time education in English in a country other than Canada where English is the principal language. These four years must be immediately prior to attending Emily Carr
- Four years of study at an eligible international secondary school that uses English as the language of instructions, in a country where the primary language is not English. These four years must be immediately prior to attending Emily Carr
- A final grade of 5 on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A1 or A2 course
- A final grade of 4 on the Advanced Placement English Language and Composition or Literature and Composition course
- A "C" grade average in six credits of transferable post-secondary English courses
- Graduation from a recognized degree program at an accredited university where English is the primary language of instruction

- An English Language Assessment Test score of:
- A TOEFL iBT score of 90 overall, with 22 in Speaking, 22 Reading, 22 Writing and 20 Listening
- A IELTS score of 7.0 overall, with minimum 7.0 Speaking, 7.0 Reading, 7.0 Writing, and 6.5 Listening
- CAEL Canadian Academic English Language score of 80 across all band descriptors
- CAE Cambridge English Advanced score of 185 overall, with at least 185 in speaking, 185 in reading, 185 in writing and 176 in listening
- CPE Cambridge Proficiency Examination score of 185 overall, with at least 185 in speaking, 185 in reading, 185 in writing and 176 in listening
- PTE Academic Pearson Test of English Academic score of 66
- MELAB Michigan English Language Assessment Battery = minimum level of 81

Mature Student
Non Matriculated Adult Applicants - This admission category is limited to residents of Canada who are at least 21 years old who have obtained at least a "C" grade in a senior level English literature course.
Special Note: If you have not completed your Secondary School Diploma, it is strongly recommended that you enroll in Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses and complete the BC Adult Graduation Diploma (or equivalent).

Aboriginal Admissions Policy - Emily Carr is dedicated to providing access and support for all applicants and particularly underrepresented populations. The University will consider aboriginal applicants who do not meet the academic standing required for admission. Consideration for admission will be based on educational background, cultural knowledge, work experience, academic goals, personal achievements and current artistic portfolio.
